Finding Joy in Imperfection: 
My Journey with Calligraphy

As an ADHD coach, I often share insights about mindfulness and personal growth with my clients. Today, I’d like to share a personal story that perfectly encapsulates these themes.

I started doing calligraphy when I was 11 years old and carried this passion throughout my school years. Recently, I felt the urge to revisit this old hobby, sparked by a mantra I had written. I decided to pick up a pen and a "practice pad" and immerse myself in the flow of creating beautiful letters once again.

To my dismay, the "practice pad" I chose was far from ideal. The ink bled, causing unsightly blotches that disrupted my attempts at precision. Frustration crept in, but I reminded myself of the true purpose behind this exercise: to practice the art of calligraphy. Regardless of the ink bleeding, I focused on getting the letters straight, maintaining consistent height, and managing my spacing.

Every day, we face obstacles that threaten to derail our progress. Often, we give up because things aren't perfect. But what is perfection? Is it even achievable? In this instance, I was in danger of losing sight of my goal—practicing the script. However, I caught myself and chose to carry on. Despite the subpar paper, I achieved my goal of practicing, identifying areas that needed improvement.

This experience taught me valuable lessons. I discovered that the paper was unsuitable, but I also got to experiment with different pens, including my cherished fountain pens. Next time, I’ll be better equipped with this knowledge and hopefully achieve a better result. But without practice and perseverance, I'll never improve or enjoy the simple pleasure of using my lovely pens.

This journey of revisiting calligraphy is a perfect metaphor for life. It's about embracing imperfection and learning from each experience. Each attempt is an opportunity to grow and refine our skills. Whether we’re managing ADHD traits or pursuing personal hobbies, the process is where true progress lies.
